For a lot of Pinoys, especially non-motorcycle riders, the idea of touring around the Philippines and spending days or even months on the road seems to be an impossible task. But, did you know that this year alone, there are 803 individuals who toured around the Philippines onboard their trusty motorcycles, cars, SUVs, bicycles, and even by foot?

These brave men and women are called Philippine Loopers.

Philippine Loop Adventure Tour

The Philippine Loop Adventure Tour (PLAT) was launched in 2013 and is organized by the Adventure Team Philippines, Inc. (ATPI). According to ATPI founder, Francis Rivera, the idea of a Philippine Loop came more than 40 years ago when he was working as a travel photographer for Philippine Airlines.

“There was so much beauty that our country has to offer, why can’t we do it and promote the beauty of our country through the eyes of motorcyclists?” he asked himself, laying the foundation for the PLAT as we know it today.

According to ATPI’s PLAT page, “The Philippine Loop is a tour-oriented project to promote the Philippines as a major sports and adventure destination in the Asia Pacific Region. It is an all-year-round and perpetual tour for Filipinos and foreign travel enthusiasts by encouraging them to travel around the Philippines over a prescribed 5,000 km route and travel time. Participants must document their experiences by way of photographs or documentaries. The Philippine Loop is endorsed by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and is allowed to use the ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ (now Love the Philippines) tagline.

For the past 11 years, ATPI has been recognizing this amazing achievement by Philippine Loopers through an awards night held in Baguio City. For 2024, ATPI has awarded 803 Philippine Loop finishers, complete with a special plaque, shirt, and of course, a special finisher’s jacket embroidered with the PLAT logo.

For the Philippine Loop finishers, this jacket is kind of similar to the jacket awarded at a Masters Golf Tournament.

Of the 803 Philippine Loopers this year, with most riding their motorcycles of various displacements, there are also those who traveled the country by car, SUV or Pickup (BMW Philippine Loop Part 1 and Part 2). Then there are those who pedaled their way around the Philippines, and even traveled on foot.

ATPI’s PLAT won’t be possible without its major sponsors: Castrol, Wheeltek, Gille Helmets; minor sponsors: Fastcat, BMW Motorrad Philippines, Standard Insurance and Kowloon House. In partnership with the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB).

So what are you waiting for? Go out and explore the beauty of the Philippines!
