Red Cross promotes Safe Card membership with DOTr and LTO
For many motorcycle riders in the Philippines, Dick Gordon’s name is synonymous with the Doble Plaka Law. However, beyond this, Gordon has also held the chairmanship of the Philippine Red Cross for more than 20 years now, where he’s currently promoting the “Safe Card” program, in partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and other government agencies for sea and air.
According to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), it is strengthening transport safety nationwide through a newly established Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Partnership in Transport Safety with the DOTr.
At the heart of this partnership is the wider adoption of the ‘PRC Safe Card’—which is designed to improve public access to emergency assistance. This initiative is seamlessly integrated with the PRC’s already robust framework of services, which includes essential first aid training, an efficient rapid emergency response system, a dedicated nationwide volunteer network, and the critical resources of 178 ambulances and 108 blood banks strategically operating throughout the Philippines.
According to the former senator and PRC chairman, this initiative is a significant development and necessary because it prioritizes the protection of human lives. They cited examples of individuals who suffered head trauma and were brought to the hospital, but couldn’t find a blood bank. With this new system, individuals will have access to blood banks and faster transportation to hospitals due to the PRC’s ambulances being available nationwide. Gordon also emphasized that people simply need to call PRC, as its blood banks are strategically accessible (to members) throughout the country.
PRC Safe Card
Essentially, the PRC Safe Card functions as a membership that provides individuals aged 3 to 85 with access to essential Philippine Red Cross services for an annual fee of PHP 1,200. This includes vital benefits such as 1 free ambulance service (maximum of 7km due to accident), 1 free unit of blood for transfusion in the event of an accident, and other forms of assistance related to accidental death, burial, and hospitalization. Beyond the individual benefits, subscribing to the Safe Card also directly supports the PRC's humanitarian efforts and allows it to sustain its wide range of programs.
