The City of Manila receives 30 units of handheld devices for ticketing
Riding your motorcycle within the City of Manila is like riding in a circus. There are traffic enforcers everywhere, but there’s no denying that many of them are selective about who they apprehend when it comes to traffic violations.
There are jeepneys that load/unload passengers in the middle of a busy street, and there are tricycles that do not follow traffic lights, as well as riders who are locals who think that following traffic rules is optional. If you’re not familiar or it is your first time riding in Manila, chances are, you’ll be following these tricycles or local riders when they enter a one-way street or make an illegal left turn.
The only problem is, that there is a big chance that it is only you who will end up with a ticket if you’re not careful, and your record will straight to LTO’s database thanks to the Single Ticketing System (STS).
After an initial dry run and testing of MMDA, the City of Manila received its first 30 units of the handheld device for the new system, making the Nation’s Capital STS-ready.
The handheld devices were received by the City Mayor herself, Honey Lacuna-Pangan, from MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes. Additionally, the City of Manila also received 5 computer sets, a server, an uninterruptible power supply, SIM cards, as well as other accessories for the continuous implementation of single ticketing system in the city.
Again, when in Manila, be sure to follow traffic rules because the next time you’re ticketed, your records will go straight to LTO’s records.
Motorcycles
Under the new NCR-wide STS policy, cities will be imposing the following penalties for motorcycle-specific traffic violations (1st to subsequent offenses):
Republic Act 10054 or Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 – PHP 1,500 to PHP 10,000
Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 Sec. 7 (C) “use of substandard helmet” – PHP 3,000 to PHP 5,000
Republic Act 10666 or Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act of 2015 – PHP 3,000 to PHP 10,000
Dress Code for motorcycle riders – PHP 500 to PHP 1,000
Additionally, the following traffic violations may also be applied to erring motorcycle riders:
Disregarding Traffic Signs (DTS) – PHP 1,000
Illegal Parking – PHP 1,000 to PHP 2,000
Reckless Driving – PHP 1,000 to PHP 2,000 (with seminar)
Overloading (passengers or cargo) – PHP 1,000
Defective Motor Vehicle Accessories – PHP 1,000
Unauthorized Modification – PHP 2,000
Illegal Counterflow – PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000
Overspeeding – PHP 1,000
Also, being discourteous to a traffic enforcer can be meted with a PHP 500 fine according to STS.
