House Resolution filed in congress to probe on BIMC
Since its inception 18 years ago, the BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge (BIMC), has always emphasized that the challenge of completing the (usual) 1,200-kilometer route throughout northern Luzon within 24 hours should be done with utmost importance on safety and following traffic laws.
Despite this, the event has unfortunately attracted riders who have little regard for road safety and traffic laws and were involved in accidents during the event.
This has caught the attention of lawmakers and has sought a probe on the BIMC.
Representatives Bonifacio Bosita and Ramon Gutierrez have filed House Resolution (HR) 1612, “Directing the Committees on Transportation and Public Order and Safety to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation, on the series of life-threatening incidents arising from the recent 2024 BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge Luzon Leg.”
According to Rep. Bosita, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported fatalities in 3 separate incidents in La Union and Pampanga.
BOSS welcomes the inquiry
Speaking with MotoPinas.com, the organizer of BIMC, the BMW Owner’s Society of Saferiders (BOSS), has welcomed the resolution and is more than willing to help lawmakers in pushing for policies that will strengthen road safety and discipline.
“BOSS welcomes the congressional inquiry in aid of legislation to strengthen road safety and discipline,” said BOSS President, Tristan Diaz.
BIMC reprimanding ‘pasaway’ participants
Throughout the years, the organizers of BIMC have continued to enact rules and policies that will discourage its participants from riding hazardously during the event.
One of the earliest examples was prescribing a minimum cutoff of 8 hours and 16 hours at the midpoint and endpoint of the challenge. Arriving earlier (riding too fast) than the prescribed time will result in a disqualification.
Another rule was the mandatory installation of GPS tracking devices which should monitor and record the actual speed of each participant throughout the event. Anyone who goes beyond the prescribed speed limit will be automatically disqualified by the organizers.
In this year’s edition, the organizers have also disqualified more than a dozen erring participants due to various infractions.
