New Yamaha V4 engine testing at Sepang next year
News about Yamaha exploring the possibility of using a V4 engine configuration in its future MotoGP campaigns has been circulating for quite some time now, with initial tests scheduled this December 2024. However, testing has been postponed due to the engine's incomplete status. The new engine’s debut is now scheduled for the Sepang shakedown test early next year.
Yamaha has seen a decline in its GP competitiveness over the years, with Ducati dominating MotoGP in recent years thanks to its V4 engine setup that gives its riders a lot of edge in racing. In fact, this strategic shift to a V4 engine configuration should align Yamaha with competitors like Ducati, Aprilia, Honda and KTM, who all utilize V4 configurations. The decision follows consultations with experts, including former Formula 1 engineer Luca Marmorini, and the recruitment of personnel from rival teams.
Factory riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, along with satellite team riders Miguel Oliveira and Jack Miller, are expected to participate in the upcoming tests, leveraging Yamaha's concession status. Will this new V4 engine take Yamaha back to its glory days in MotoGP?
