We test this very utilitarian scooter from Taiwan
Scooters have become an essential part of daily life for many Filipinos as it is used for commuting to work, running errands, bringing kids to school, and even hauling both small and large items. Yet, despite their popularity, very few scooters in the market are truly designed with utility in mind as most models prioritize sporty styling and aesthetics or porma over practicality and everyday functionality.
This is where KYMCO’s Dollar 150 comes in, a scooter I like to call the “pickup truck on two wheels.”
Pang-baragan
In true Pinoy slang, pang-baragan refers to something rugged, dependable, and tough enough to withstand anything you throw at it, you know, the kind of ride you’d count on when the zombie apocalypse hits. The KYMCO Dollar 150 is a good contender on this.
While the concept of “utility scooters” isn’t new (Japanese market models from the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s serve as earlier examples), KYMCO brings it back for the modern rider with purpose.
As mentioned in the video, 150cc scooters are everywhere these days, so most riders are already familiar with their specs. Here, we’ll focus on what sets the Dollar 150 apart. Up front, it features a “basket” ideal for strapping a small bag or helmet. The floorboard stands out as one of the largest, if not the largest, in the Philippine scooter market today, offering ample space for a big luggage (like those you would take with you if you’re going on a couple of weeks' trip abroad), a basket, or even a couple of sacks of rice.
At the rear, the Dollar 150 features KYMCO’s “Flip-Tech Seat” system, which easily converts into a cargo mode. Think of it like a movable top-box rack: in its default setup, the pillion seat stays put, comfortably accommodating a passenger for a standard backride. When more cargo space is needed, the rider can simply flip the pillion seat up to double as a backrest. Additionally, you can also slide the rack forward to carry heavier loads with ease.
The demo unit provided by our friends from KYMCO also comes equipped with mounts for side panniers and crash guards, which double as handy racks for securing small items like a toolkit, tent, or extra side bags.
Other features include LED lights, Type C charger, digital panel, front disc brake, hazard light switch, and its 8-liter fuel tank with its filler cap conveniently located on the left side beneath the handlebars. Based on my riding style, the Dollar 150 delivered a fuel economy of 43 km/L. With its 8-liter tank, that’s enough to comfortably cover the distance from Manila to Candon, Ilocos Sur, with a little fuel to spare.
As basic as it gets
Back in the day, utility vehicles like SUVs and pickups were built simple, you know, “less parts mean fewer things to worry about.” The KYMCO Dollar 150 follows the same philosophy. Everything about it is straightforward (almost), from its utilitarian styling, basic suspension, and a simple air-cooled engine. It’s this “back-to-basics” approach that, in my book, makes the Dollar 150 truly stand out.
It’s not the quickest among today’s 150cc scooters, but it easily outpaces most when it comes to carrying capacity. With its strong utility focus, the Dollar 150 clearly shows that KYMCO prioritized everyday practicality: perfect for errands, MC taxi duties, light cargo tasks, or versatile riding over flashy, sporty styling.
