Big bike Bus Lane violator caught by LTO Chief
Since November 2023, the fine for bus lane violations has been increased to PHP 5,000 and may reach up to PHP 30,000 for repeat offenders, along with possible driver’s license revocation. In addition, the No-Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) utilizes high-definition CCTVs to capture both traffic violations and vehicle license plates.
But what if you’re a big bike rider who thinks the law doesn’t apply to you and uses the bus lane for convenience? That assumption proved costly this morning, as one rider was flagged down for a bus lane violation by none other than Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Markus Lacanilao himself.
According to LTO, the rider of what appeared to be a Kawasaki Z400 was flagged down by Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao at around 8:30 a.m. on EDSA southbound near Shaw Boulevard after the motorcycle was observed using the exclusive bus lane and operating without a license plate.
Instead of stopping, the rider allegedly fled, prompting a brief pursuit along EDSA before authorities were able to intercept and stop the motorcycle. Upon inspection, officials found that the instrument panel gauge was broken and the plate light was defective, in addition to the earlier violations.
The motorcycle was subsequently impounded for proper documentation and further action. Lacanilao warned motorists that the bus lane is strictly reserved for buses and any misuse will not be tolerated.
