Non-compliant helmets destroyed by DTI
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has destroyed a total of 635 substandard motorcycle helmets which are deemed unsafe for use. These helmets have not undergone the PS (Philippine Standard) or ICC (Import Commodity Clearance) processes.
According to DTI, these were seized by the agency in the last 7 years and were stored in one of their warehouses. DTI also noted that more non-DTI compliant products will be destroyed in the coming days.
“Kung gagamitin nila ang mga produkto na ito yung dapat sinira natin, wala tayong assurance kung safe ito. Halimbawa, yung helmet, hindi sya na-test… kung safe sya sa mga gagamit nito,” said DTI Assistant Secretary, Amanda Marie Nograles.
(If consumers will use these products that we’re about to destroy, we don’t have any assurance if these are safe for use. For example, the motorcycle helmets, they have not been tested if it’s safe for consumer use.)
Along with the motorcycle helmets, the DTI also destroyed fireworks, monobloc chairs, sanitary wares and other products that have not undergone DTI testing or certification. The destroyed products are valued at more or less PHP 1.8 million.
“Some of those have PS marks, but they were counterfeit. So, we really need to destroy them,” added Nograles.
