EDSA rehabilitation works commencing in June

Back in March, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that the long-overdue EDSA rehabilitation will be commencing. After several delays, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has now definitively stated that the project will commence on mid-June 2025. This timeline has also been echoed by MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes, who gave a June 13 starting date. Artes also told the public to brace for the heavy traffic that will follow.

“We won’t sugarcoat it. There will be traffic. So, we have some proposals, and consultations with different sectors have been agreed upon, which will be presented to the public [soon],” said Artes.

In an earlier statement, the EDSA Busway will be business as usual, since it will be relocated to the adjacent lane during segmented repairs along the throughway.

Toll holiday on Skyway sought

Recognizing that the already congested EDSA will likely experience much worse traffic during the planned rehabilitation, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon says that the DOTr is currently engaged in talks with San Miguel Corporation, the operator of Skyway (including Stage 3). The aim of these discussions is to potentially waive the toll fees on certain sections of the elevated tollway to provide some relief to motorists during the EDSA rehab works.

As the EDSA rehabilitation is slated to commence next month, motorists should prepare for potential disruptions by planning their journeys in advance or deferring travel involving EDSA if feasible. For those who must traverse EDSA during this potentially months or even years-long period of construction works, it is recommended to travel earlier than usual and consider alternative routes. Oh, and bring lots and lots of patience.
