Gary Gray inducted into Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame
In a major industry recognition, Gary Gray, Indian Motorcycle’s Vice President of Product Technology, Racing, and Service, has been inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame.
Honored for his profound contributions to motorcycling, the induction celebrates Gray’s 30-year career marked by leadership, innovation, and an unwavering dedication to the sport. His expertise in engineering and product development has been instrumental in revitalizing and sustaining the iconic American motorcycle brand.
Aaron Jax, Vice President of Indian Motorcycle, described Gray’s contributions as “extraordinary,” highlighting his role in shaping how millions of people experience motorcycling. Over the past eight years at Indian Motorcycle, Gray has been a pivotal force in the brand’s return to racing.
Gray spearheaded the development of the Indian FTR750, the most dominant race machine in American Flat Track (AFT), leading the brand to an impressive eight consecutive AFT premier-class championships along with three King of the Baggers titles and multiple land speed records.
Beyond his racing achievements, Gray played a crucial role in the company’s product development. As product director, he was instrumental in the launch of the 2014 Indian Chief, Chieftain, and Roadmaster—the brand’s first models since its relaunch under Polaris Inc.
He was also a key figure in the design of the Thunderstroke engine, which continues to power many of today’s models. Gray also helped launch the next-generation Indian Scout and its 999cc, liquid-cooled motor.
Before his time at Indian Motorcycle, Gray was a founding team member of Victory Motorcycles, where he served as engineering program manager and product manager. His work helped shape the brand’s rise in the American market.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, in recognizing Gray, celebrates a visionary whose passion and dedication continue to inspire future generations to embrace the adventure and freedom at the core of motorcycling.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is celebrated annually in Sturgis, South Dakota, attracting thousands of enthusiasts for 10 days of riding, concerts, and motorcycle culture. This year’s event features a packed schedule of live music from headliners like ZZ Top and Gene Simmons at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, alongside traditional activities such as the Mayor’s Ride and the Police Chief’s Ride.
It began in 1938 as an event for stunts and races, organized by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders. Over the decades, it has evolved into a diverse gathering with events hosted by numerous groups. Historically, the rally has drawn an attendance of around 500,000 people, with a peak of over 700,000 in 2015. Held over 10 days, the event generates approximately USD 800 million in annual revenue.
