Kawasaki’s new Elektrode bikes brings electric balance biking to kids and kids at heart
Kawasaki has expanded its electric lineup, but this time it’s not with another motorcycle. Instead, the Japanese manufacturer has unveiled the Elektrode 20, an electric balance bike designed for older kids and even adults looking for a lightweight machine for trails, campsites, and other recreational rides.
Unlike a conventional e-bike or pedal-assist mountain bike, the Elektrode 20 doesn’t use pedals or a chain drive. Instead, riders stand on foldable footpegs, similar to a dirtbike, while a 750W rear brushless hub motor provides the drive. Power comes from a 50.4V lithium-ion battery integrated into the aluminum frame. Kawasaki claims up to three hours of riding time in Low mode, with a full recharge taking about four hours.
Elektrode 20FS
The Elektrode 20 offers three riding modes to suit different skill levels. Low mode limits top speed to 21 km/h, while Mid and High modes increase it to 39 km/h. An LCD display on the handlebars allows riders to switch between modes while also showing battery status and other riding information.
Designed with light off-road riding in mind, the Elektrode 20 rolls on 20-inch mountain bike-style tires and comes equipped with a telescopic front fork, mechanical disc brakes front and rear, and adjustable handlebars and seat height. Kawasaki also claims a curb weight of just 20.9 kg, making it light enough to load into a vehicle or move around without much effort.
For riders who prefer pavement or BMX-style riding, Kawasaki also offers the Elektrode 20FS. It uses the same electric powertrain but replaces the suspension fork with a rigid unit and features BMX-style tires and taller handlebars better suited for bike parks, pump tracks, and other recreational areas.
One interesting detail about the Elektrode lineup is that it isn’t simply a rebadged bicycle from another manufacturer. Since the original Elektrode 16 debuted in 2023, Kawasaki has consistently described the bikes as designed and built by Kawasaki.
Elektrode 20
In the US, both the Elektrode 20 and Elektrode 20FS retail for USD 2,199, or around PHP 135,200 based on current exchange rates. Bad news if you were already thinking of getting one. Our friends from Kawasaki Philippines have told MotoPinas.com that the Elektrode lineup isn’t coming to the local market. Of course, if sales overseas exceed expectations, nothing says that decision can’t change.
