Driver’s license of Marilaque rider revoked by LTO
Last month, 2 motorcycle riders who seemed to be doing a “superman” stunt – laying flat on their stomach while the motorcycle was running at speed – along Marilaque in Tanay, Rizal, figured in an accident that resulted in 1 fatality and injuries to bystanders.
This prompted an investigation from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), while authorities imposed stricter rules on the said highway. Now, the LTO announced that the agency has revoked the driver’s license of one of the riders involved in the tragic accident.
LTO Chief, Atty. Vigor Mendoza II said the decision was made based on the pieces of evidence and after giving the rider the opportunity to explain his side as part of the due process.
“The driver’s license that the government is issuing to the motorists is a privilege that comes with a responsibility that those who would get it would observe road safety and be a responsible driver at all times,” said Mendoza.
In the video that has since gone viral on social media, the two motorcycle riders were seen performing a dangerous stunt, possibly to gain views on their respective social media accounts. Seconds later, their motorcycles collided with each other which then resulted in the fatal accident.
The motorcycles that crashed hit at least 6 other people who were resting in the area.
Based on the investigation report by the LTO-CALABARZON headed by Regional Director Elmer Decena, the surviving rider from the accident was found guilty of reckless driving and is now an unauthorized person to operate a motor vehicle, and recommended that his rider's driver's license be revoked.
The LTO has been aggressively advocating for road safety in line with the advocacy of DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista to ensure the safety of all road users under the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan which is aimed at reducing road accidents in the country by at least 35% by 2028.
On the part of the LTO, it launched the “Stop Road Crash” campaign by promoting responsible driving through education, training and information drive.
