AI poised to enhance traffic flow in Metro Manila, says MMDA
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is actively exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance traffic detection and control, building on its recent adaptive signaling system. This move aims to significantly improve traffic flow and, crucially for many, minimize road crashes—a persistent concern for motorcycle riders.

MMDA Chairman, Atty. Don Artes, announced the agency’s plan to shift from traditional ground loop detectors to more sophisticated video detectors, hoping for implementation by next year.
For motorcyclists, this could mean more precise and responsive traffic management. Unlike older systems, these AI-powered video detectors are less susceptible to damage and can capture vital information like vehicle speed, direction, and even license plate numbers. This capability could lead to fairer enforcement and better understanding of traffic dynamics involving all types of vehicles, including motorcycles.
Chairman Artes also highlighted issues like inconsistent traffic light countdown timers and drivers beating red lights—situations that often put two-wheeled vehicles at heightened risk. This AI initiative follows the MMDA’s recent removal of countdown timers at 96 major intersections, replacing fixed-timer lights with sensor-based adaptive systems. This ongoing modernization by the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC) aims to create a safer, more efficient road environment for all, with tangible benefits for the daily commute of all road users.
