PBBM says detour bridges shall be made in EDSA-Guadalupe before construction
In his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) yesterday, July 28, 2025, President, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., said that the total closure in October of the EDSA-Guadalupe Bridge due to rehab works, will be postponed until detour bridges are constructed so as to not impede the flow of traffic along the major throughfare.
“Hindi po isasara ang Guadalupe Bridge. Gagawa muna tayo ng detour bridge sa magkabilang gilid bilang pansamantalang daanan. Kapag nagawa na at binuksan na ang detour bridge, doon pa lang sisimulan ang trabaho sa main bridge,” said the President.
(The Guadalupe Bridge will not be closed. We will first build a detour bridge on both sides as a temporary route. Once the detour bridge is built and opened, only then will work begin on the main bridge.)
The current bridge, which was constructed in the 1960s, has already exceeded its original design lifespan and vehicular capacity, and is already in dire need of crucial repairs and the President acknowledges its urgency, saying that it was already being discussed when he was in the Senate between 2010 and 2016.
“Ang rehabilitasyon din ng tulay ng Guadalupe ay sukdulan na ring kailangan. Nasa Senado pa lamang ako, pinag-uusapan na ito. Hindi ko na papayagan,” Marcos said, indicating his administration will no longer delay the critical infrastructure work.
(The rehabilitation of the Guadalupe Bridge is also desperately needed. When I was still in the Senate, this was already being discussed. I will not allow it to happen again.)
The President, however, didn’t provide any timeline or specifics as to when the DPWH will begin constructing the detour bridges to give way to the eventual rehab works on the EDSA-Guadalupe Bridge.
