PBBM gives grace period to e-bike users, tricycles, pedicabs
Last February, the Metro Manila Council (MMC), through the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), passed a resolution prohibiting the use of e-bikes along major thoroughfares and other types of conveyances. E-bikes is the collective term used for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.
Under MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024, traversing of e-vehicles, such as e-bikes and e-trikes, as well as tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and kuligligs on national roads, circumferential, and radial roads in Metro Manila will be prohibited. The “e-bike ban” was implemented on April 15, 2024.
Just recently, President, Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos, Jr., instructed the MMDA, as well as the Local Government Units in Metro Manila, to postpone the imposition of fines and penalties to erring e-bike users, as well as drivers/operators of tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and kuligligs on major thoroughfares that were identified under MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024.
The President, however, clarified that MMDA Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024 is still in effect, and law enforcers would still flag down these drivers to inform/remind them about the new policy and what roads they can use their e-bikes, tricycles, pedicabs and kuligligs.
The President also said that more time is needed for the information dissemination of the new MMDA regulation.
