Petent for a new electric MX bike filed by Suzuki
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more accessible to consumers these days, and are expected to become even more accessible thanks to our government putting ZERO tariffs on the importation of EVs until 2028, including electric motorcycles.
But unlike EVs, e-motorcycles and other electric two-wheelers don’t have enough juice to cover the distance and hence are limited to urban or last-mile travel only.
In motocross (MX), however, these battery-powered motorcycles may have a huge potential and the latest manufacturer to join the e-dirtbike bandwagon is Suzuki.
Electric RM-Z
In a recent patent filing by the Hamamatsu-based manufacturer, an MX bike chassis is seen fitted with an electric motor and the drivetrain. While the patent does not give out many details such as battery range and the power output of the motor, it seems that Suzuki will be utilizing its RM-Z chassis for the upcoming electric MX bike. That makes a lot of sense since Suzuki had already invested a lot to refine the RM-Z over the years and building a new chassis from scratch may result in cost overruns for the project.
From the information available, Suzuki is basically building a new electric bike on the RM-Z platform as opposed to building a new bike out of the new electric motor and its components.
This is also good news for the new generation of MX riders who began their training onboard small electric MX bikes and will be moving up to faster and more powerful electric MX bikes – much like kids “graduating” from small 50cc peewees then moving up to 80cc then to 150cc all the way to the 450cc MX bikes as they grow up and become more skilled on the dirt track.
Availability
Filing a patent for a particular motorcycle model doesn't necessarily mean that the model will become a production bike any time soon but with today's push for ZERO emissions transport, this electric RM-Z has a big chance of seeing the light of day inside dealerships soon.
