Donut Lab claims to have developed a production-ready solid-state battery

The popularity of fully electric vehicles, more commonly known simply as EVs, is steadily rising in developing countries like the Philippines. With a significantly lower cost per kilometer compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles, along with exemption from the number coding scheme, EVs have become an attractive option for buyers who can afford them.

This is particularly true for motorists living and working in Metro Manila and nearby areas. While range anxiety still lingers for some, most modern EVs already offer enough battery capacity to reach destinations as far as Baguio City, and the growing number of charging stations across the country continues to ease those concerns.

For motorcycles, however, range is still limited to just 50 to 70 kilometers in real driving conditions and charging is still a whole day affair.

Now, an e-mobility technology company based in Finland claims that it has developed the world’s first production solid-state battery that is capable of recharging from 0 to 100% in just 5 minutes.

In the video above, Donut Lab co-founder and CEO Marko Lehtimäki says the company’s solid-state battery can retain up to 99% of its energy even under extreme temperatures and withstand as many as 100,000 charge cycles.

According to Donut Lab, the battery achieves an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, paving the way for longer range, lighter vehicle structures, and greater design flexibility across mobility and industrial applications. The company further claims the battery can be fully charged in just five minutes, without the common limitation of stopping at 80%, and can be safely and repeatedly discharged to 100% without compromising performance or reliability.

What’s more, Donut Lab claims, is that these solid-state batteries are “made of globally abundant materials” and costs lower to produce than lithium-ion batteries.

600-kilometer range in motorcycles?

Because solid-state batteries are more compact and can store significantly more energy than conventional lithium-ion units, their use in motorcycles could finally put an end to range anxiety.

A clear example is Verge Motorcycles, which plans to roll out bikes powered by Donut Lab’s solid-state batteries. Verge claims a range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. Even more striking, the technology is said to add around 60 kilometers of combined range per minute of charging, allowing a 0–100% charge in under 10 minutes.

According to Verge Motorcycles, initial deliveries of Donut Lab-powered models are scheduled to begin in Q1 of this year, marking a potential turning point for electric motorcycles.
