DOTr defers implementation of new tollway guidelines
Last week, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) announced that through the Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) 2024-01, motorists who continue to use the tollways (aka expressways) without a valid RFID or with insufficient load will be penalized up to PHP 5,000 starting August 31, 2024.
Now, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) says that it is deferring the implementation of JMC 2024-01 to October 1, 2024, to “finetune expressway operations and further intensify the public information campaign” of tollway operators.
“These revised guidelines should significantly improve traffic along expressways through cashless or contactless toll plazas,” said Transportation Secretary, Jaime Bautista.
In 2021, TRB moved closer to cashless expressways by designating only one exit lane for cash transactions at toll plazas (all other lanes for ETC) in compliance to a Department Order of DOTr.
The transport chief is soliciting the support of tollway users by complying with provisions of the JMC that covers expressways under TRB’s jurisdiction.
