MotoGP sets new rules effective 2027
MotoGP – the most prestigious grand prix racing for motorcycles – has announced some rule changes for its 2027 season.
Here are some of the most important changes that will take effect in the 2027 racing season:
Engine
Probably, the most significant change in the rules will affect the engine. Starting 2027, engine displacements will be lowered to 850 cc from the current 1,000 cc. According to MotoGP, this will decrease speeds to make the races safer.
Lowering the engine displacement also means more fuel-efficient engines vs the current 1,000 cc engines, thus using lesser fuel during races.
Additionally, the maximum bore will be reduced to 75 mm from the current 81 mm. While this means lesser performance, it also means that the engines will be “more road-relevant,” according to MotoGP.
Lastly, race engines for each rider will be limited to 6 per season, from the current 7.
Fuel
Starting 2027, MotoGP race bikes will use only 100% sustainable fuel, from the current 40% this season.
The fuel tank capacity will be reduced from the current 22 liters to 20 liters in 2027.
Aerodynamics
Bike aerodynamics will be tightly controlled starting the 2027 racing season. The top fairing of race bikes will be 50 mm narrower than the current regulations, while the nose will be pushed back by 50 mm.
MotoGP says that these changes should reduce the effect of aero on the straights and in braking areas, thus making the race much more competitive.
On the rear, the aero behind the rider will be part homologation, and teams will only be allowed to update only once per season to control costs.
Ride leveling devices
All ride leveling a.k.a. ride height devices, as well as Hole Shot devices will be banned starting 2027.
GPS data
Starting 2027 racing season, all GPS data from all the riders will be available to all teams after each session. According to MotoGP, this should level the playing field as data from successful teams will become available to lesser successful teams.
