New Smash Fi fuel efficient as ever
Underbone motorcycles have been a staple in Pinoy riding culture for decades. These motorcycles are robust, require little maintenance, and most of all, fuel efficient. In the early 90s, Suzuki was one of the first manufacturers to introduce the underbone motorcycle here in the country with its RC110 Crystal.
In 2002, Suzuki introduced the Smash 110 underbone motorcycle, alongside the Raider 125. After years of refinement, the Smash made a comeback in 2023 as the new Smash Fi – now powered by an electronically fuel-injected 113cc engine with Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP).
This new version of the Smash underbone was designed and built with 5 Ms in mind: Mura, Matipid, Malakas, Maporma, Matibay.
Mura
Mura means that the new Smash Fi is affordable to Juan dela Cruz. With a price tag that starts at PHP 66,400 (spokes), the new Smash Fi is one of the most affordable underbones available in the market today. Most dealers offer the Smash Fi with a low down payment of only PHP 3,000.
Matipid
Matipid means that the new Smash Fi is fuel efficient. EFI technology is pretty straightforward: fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber via fuel injectors (FI) and the amount of fuel delivered is controlled by the ECU (engine control unit) to ensure that the engine runs as efficiently as possible, that’s why the new Smash Fi boasts a 68 kilometers per liter fuel economy.
Malakas
Malakas means that the new Smash Fi is powerful for its class – able to deliver a max power output of 9.25 PS at 7,000 rpm and 9.1 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm.
Maporma
Maporma means stylish. Its timeless body styling doesn’t need any reconfiguration. It is simple yet striking and will remain relevant for many years to come.
Matibay
Matibay means durable. When Suzuki introduced the Smash 110 in 2002, its frame, engine, and components largely remained the same which proves the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
The Smash has always been one of Suzuki’s best-selling underbones for the past 21 years, and you can still see many of the early models of this motorcycle running and taking its owners to and from work, running errands, carrying stuff for business, etc.
Riding the Smash Fi
Our stint with Suzuki’s Smash Fi was a bit short due to scheduling conflicts, but it was sweet nonetheless. We were able to take it for a midnight stroll in Makati and around Cavite City the following morning. If I remember correctly, the fuel tank was about a quarter full when the demo unit was picked up by our friends from Suzuki.
It just shows how fuel efficient the Smash Fi was, never needing a refill on its 3.7-liter fuel tank even after riding around Makati and Cavite City and back home.
Underbones in general are workhorses. These underbones have nothing special in terms of power, speed, suspension, riding aids, etc., but they excel in durability and fuel efficiency. These underbones can run for years only requiring little maintenance. The same goes with the Smash Fi.
That said, the Smash has been and will always be one of the most durable underbone models in the past 2 decades, and it will continue to do so with more fuel savings thanks to its EFI system.
With today’s era of MC Taxis and couriers, the Smash Fi could be one of the best candidates as a workhorse because it is Mura, Matipid, Malakas, Maporma, Matibay.
