P51 hybrid concept unveiled by Benda at EICMA
Back in May, reports emerged that Chinese motorcycle maker, Benda, was developing a model inspired by BMW’s iconic boxer twin engines. At this year’s EICMA show in Italy, the company officially unveiled the boxer twin-engined P51 Hybrid Concept, making its public debut.
250cc hybrid
What sets this model apart is its use of a boxer engine, a design that has been around since 1923 but is rarely seen in modern motorcycles except BMWs. Benda’s engineers paired a 250cc liquid-cooled boxer engine with an electric motor, creating a hybrid system that produces a claimed 62 PS and 100 Nm of torque. According to the company, this allows the 178-kg bike to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Benda also notes that the engine is paired with a single-speed setup, meaning the bike lacks a traditional 5 or 6 gear transmission. We estimate that the 250cc boxer engine primarily serves to generate electricity for the P51’s batteries, providing additional power to the single-speed drivetrain only when needed, such as during overtaking or climbing steep inclines.
It’s important to note that the P51 is still a concept model and much of the details are not yet available, and Benda has not announced any plans for a production version.
