Honda unveils vision behind EV Outlier concept scooter
At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Honda made it clear that its ambitions in the electric motorcycle space go far beyond simple electrification. Rather than adapting existing formulas, the brand chose to rethink the motorcycle from the ground up. The result is the EV Outlier Concept, which, according to Honda, is an exploration of what two-wheeled mobility can become when freed from conventional constraints. Leading this effort was Yuya Tsutsumi, Large Project Leader, who guided the concept from its earliest ideas to a fully realized model.
For Tsutsumi, the name “Outlier” reflects the project’s core philosophy. It represents a machine unconstrained by established norms, signaling that Honda’s electric future is not about replacing internal combustion engines, but about creating an entirely new category. Unlike his usual role of translating design sketches into production models, Tsutsumi oversaw every stage of development. The team began by resetting traditional values and asking a fundamental question: what experiences are possible only through electrification?
The development process remained distinctly Honda. Designers from Japan and overseas collaborated through Waigaya—open, free-flowing discussions that challenged assumptions and encouraged cross-cultural thinking. This approach led to a design that feels radically new yet thoughtfully engineered.
Visually and dynamically, the EV Outlier builds on Honda’s “Precision of Intrinsic Design” philosophy while introducing three defining elements: Gliding, Ecstasy, and Low. Gliding captures the smooth, seamless flow of electric riding, while Ecstasy delivers instant torque and heightened responsiveness. The Low concept, achieved through a lowered seating position and emphasized front volume, reshapes rider perception, improving visibility and enhancing the sensation of acceleration and control.
Advanced features reinforce this vision, including camera-based mirrors, a wide instrument display, and a GUI that visualizes lean angle and motor output. These elements deepen rider engagement and introduce new forms of interaction.
Unveiled to global audiences at the Japan Mobility Show, the EV Outlier Concept reflects Honda’s willingness to explore the unknown. In an emerging electric landscape with few benchmarks, Honda is not merely adapting—it is actively shaping the future of electric motorcycles.
