GWM's Gold Wing-inspired tourer on the way
The Honda Gold Wing, which was first introduced in 1974, is considered by many as the “King of Touring Motorcycles” because of its many features that offer luxurious and comfortable riding experience especially in the long haul.
Now in its 6th generation, the Gold Wing is powered by a flat 6-cylinder 1,833 cc engine that is mated to a dual-clutch transmission. In China, Great Wall Motor (GWM) is reportedly developing a motorcycle that will rival the Gold Wing, and it’s powered by a flat 8 engine.
Based on a latest video that was shared on social media by GWM’s chairman, Wei Jianjun, a motorcycle was seen in the background, with its cover partially pulled back to show a piece of the upcoming model.
According to reports, GWM has already filed numerous patents for the development of a new tourer that has design cues that were inspired by Honda’s Gold Wing. But instead of a flat 6-cylinder engine, GWM’s upcoming tourer would be featuring a 2.0L (2,000 cc) flat 8-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with dual overhead camshafts.
Like Honda’s Gold Wing, the Chinese version tourer would also feature a dual-clutch transmission that will be placed directly underneath the flat 8-cylinder engine with shaft as final drive.
The engine’s cooling system will be placed above the cylinder banks on both sides. The other features of this 8-cylinder tourer from GWM is likely to be revealed in the upcoming Beijing Auto Show in April 24, 2024.
For those who are not aware, GWM is one of China’s largest automobile manufacturers and is the largest in terms of sport utility vehicle (SUV) production. It owns the brands HAVAL, Ora, Wey, and Tank.
