MotoE Championship will be scrapped after 2025 due to lack of growth
Electric motorcycles are the future, or so thought MotoGP, as the FIM and Dorna Sports have confirmed that the FIM MotoE World Championship will be discontinued following the 2025 season, bringing an end to the all-electric racing series after seven years on the MotoGP calendar.
Introduced in 2019 as part of MotoGP’s sustainability efforts, MotoE was envisioned as the sport’s first step toward an electric future. However, both organizers acknowledged that the series has struggled to capture fan interest and that the wider electric motorcycle market has not developed as quickly as anticipated.
In a joint statement, MotoGP’s governing bodies admitted that MotoE “has not been able to gain sufficient traction within [the] fanbase,” while sales of high-performance electric motorcycles remain limited worldwide. Without a strong commercial foundation or significant technological breakthroughs, the series could not justify its continuation.
Electric motorcycle racing was meant to be the future, but reality got in the way. The promise of sustainability couldn’t outweigh the steep costs, short range, and less-than-favorable fan response that kept the series from ever truly taking root.
Despite MotoE’s upcoming hiatus, MotoGP remains committed to reducing its environmental impact, promising to adopt fuels made from a minimum of 40% non-fossil sources, with the target of reaching 100% by 2027. Organizers say they will continue to monitor advances in electric and hybrid technologies, leaving the door open for a future return.
