DOTr says decade-long MC plate backlog to end very soon
Motorcycle license plates remain the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) enduring Achilles’ heel. For over a decade and despite several LTO chiefs, this persistent issue has yet to be resolved. In fact, LTO Assistant Secretary, Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, had committed in August 2024 that this issue would be resolved by June this year, a deadline that has passed.
“Starting October [2024], we will be bringing out 1 million plates a month to cover the 9 million backlog. Para (so) exactly by June of next year, tapos na itong (we’re finished with the) 9-million backlog,” said Mendoza.
So, where are we now? According to Transportation Secretary, Vince Dizon, the government is very close to finally resolving the backlog on motorcycle license plates.
“Siguro mag-aanunsyo ang LTO in the coming days, pero maganda yung ibabalita, dahil malapit nang mabura yung mahigit sampung taon na problema ng backlog ng plaka ng mga motorsiklo. Alam naman natin na mahigit 5 milyon yan simula pa nung 2014. Baka yung mga ibang motorsiklo dun, hindi na gumagana, wala pa rin silang plaka hanggang ngayon. Pero, finally, ngayon sa administrasyon ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos, eh maso-solve na natin yan,” said Sec. Dizon.
(Perhaps the LTO will announce in the coming days, but the news will be good, because the more than a decade problem of motorcycle plate backlog is about to be erased. We know that’s over 5 million since 2014. Maybe some of those motorcycles there aren't even working anymore, they still don't have plates until now. But, finally, now in the administration of President Bongbong Marcos, we will solve that.)
During a small talk with MotoPinas.com, LTO Executive Director, Atty. Greg Pua, Jr., said that there’s only 15%, more or less, remaining backlog on motorcycle license plates. E.D. Pua also said that one of the agency’s priorities now is the distribution of the already available license plates, which motorists can request door-to-door delivery via the LTO Tracker.
