Vietnam Gov't to reward citizens reporting traffic violators
Driving your vehicle or riding your motorcycle on a daily basis here in the country can be stressful. You know, drivers/riders who won’t give way, will cut you in line, swerve, beat the red light, honk at you 4 seconds before the green light, PUVs that think that the middle of the road is an extension of their illegal terminal, and the list goes on and on and on.
That said, with all these kamotes on the road, don’t you wish that someday, you could earn money by sending proof of their ka-kamotehan to the authorities through their traffic violation fines?
Well, you can, if you live in Vietnam.
Just recently, the Government of Vietnam enacted Decree 176/2025, which basically gives incentives for a verified traffic violation by motorists sent via photo or video. For example, citizens can photograph or record a video of a traffic violator (with license plate, location, and other important details), and then send it to authorities. Depending on the severity of the traffic violation, citizens can get up to 10% of the amount of the penalty imposed on the motorist, or up to VND 5 million – roughly PHP 11,500.
The informant’s identity will be kept confidential.
According to Vietnam news sources, this new program is part of the government’s efforts to improve road safety and has imposed heavier fines on traffic violations. If a motorist passes a red light, that’s a minimum VND 18 million or roughly PHP 41,500. For reckless driving, violators can be fined up to VND 48 million or roughly PHP 110,500.
