990 RC R ‘ready for production’
Last month, KTM announced that production of several of its big bike models would be pushed back, with the 1390 Super Duke GT not rolling off the production line until 2027. But, there’s some throttle-twisting good news for speed junkies, as the long-awaited 990 RC R, KTM’s “Supersport-oriented” machine, is finally revving toward reality, with production slated to kick off as early as this month.
KTM claims that the new 990 RC R is engineered for both the road and the racetrack, and combines high-performance capability with everyday usability, which is a true embodiment of KTM’s “Ready to Race” spirit.
Developed in Austria and inspired by years of MotoGP-derived R&D, the 990 RC R features a purpose-built steel chassis with a diecast aluminum subframe designed for precision handling and agility. Power comes from the same Euro5+ compliant LC8c parallel-twin engine found in many of KTM’s middleweight models, producing 130 PS and 103 Nm of torque.
The bike’s aerodynamic styling pays homage to KTM’s racing DNA, complemented by premium hardware such as WP APEX suspension, 320mm Brembo brakes, and an 8.8-inch TFT display with multiple ride and ABS modes, including STREET, SPORT, SUPERMOTO+, and SUPERMOTO.
Perhaps what makes the 990 RC R an able-bodied daily rider is the addition of adjustable footrests and its optimized ergonomics. One setting makes for spirited or even track riding, while the other setting would make for daily commutes and long-distance touring.
Set to enter production anytime this month, the 990 RC R will be available in signature orange and black colorways. Additionally, KTM will introduce a track-only version, the KTM 990 RC R TRACK, arriving in February 2026, purpose-built with racing components such as direct brake lines, reduced electronics, and a track-optimized gearbox.
KTM also says that it plans to launch the 990 RC R CUP in Europe by spring 2026, offering riders a stepping stone into competitive racing with mentorship from professional KTM athletes.
According to Riaan Neveling, KTM Global Marketing Manager, the 990 RC R bridges the brand’s on-road lineup with its MotoGP expertise, bringing authentic performance and excitement to riders eager for a new supersport experience. PH availability and pricing to be announced soon by Lucky MAPI’s successor distributor, which is yet to be named by the Austrians (or the Indians) as of this writing.
