No order from DOTr or LTO chief to penalize users of improvised plates
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has confirmed that there is no official order from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) or LTO Chief, Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, to penalize owners for the continued use of improvised plates. This comes after reports that the agency has begun the imposition of penalties on motor vehicle owners who fail to claim their license plates.
Instead, all LTO personnel have been directed to focus on exhausting every measure to comply with the President’s instruction to release all license plates within three months. The agency’s new focus comes after it successfully resolved its 11-year license plate backlog on June 30.
In a recent announcement, the LTO encourages all motor vehicle owners to secure their unclaimed original and replacement plates as soon as possible. Plates can be claimed either through the online platform LTOTracker, or at any LTO office nationwide.
Motorists should also stay alert for the latest LTO license plate distribution caravans. These events will bring the plate collection process closer to communities, with activities scheduled at the barangay level and at shopping malls.
