Pirelli testing tires ahead of 2027 MotoGP season
Pirelli has completed its first on-track test of prototype MotoGP tyres at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, marking the beginning of its preparation to become the sole tire supplier of the premier class starting in the 2027 season.
Test riders from all five manufacturers—Michele Pirro (Ducati), Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia), Dani Pedrosa (KTM), Takaaki Nakagami (Honda), and Augusto Fernandez (Yamaha)—took part in the session. The teams ran their current bikes with ride-height devices deactivated and modified aerodynamics to replicate the technical configuration of the new 850cc machines that will be introduced in 2027.
Each rider was provided with seven sets of tires in different front and rear specifications, all in the current 17-inch rim size. Testing took place in dry and stable track conditions, with asphalt temperatures ranging from 25°C to 43°C.
The tires are being developed exclusively for MotoGP, in compliance with regulations, and will be produced at Pirelli’s facility in Breuberg, Germany. The company confirmed it will apply its existing manufacturing processes and technology transfer approach, already established in the FIM Superbike World Championship, to ensure consistency, quality, and sustainability.
Pirelli Moto Racing Director Giorgio Barbier said initial feedback was “very encouraging,” noting that grip, warm-up speed, and rider confidence were the most appreciated characteristics. The program also included a Sprint race simulation.
The test marks the first phase of development under Pirelli’s new five-year agreement with Dorna, which also extends its role as sole tire supplier for Moto2, Moto3, and the Road to MotoGP talent cups until 2031.
